Abstract

From circular stands to quietly embedded technology, the April fair showed sustainability and intelligence moving into the structure of products.

Background

The 64th Salone del Mobile.Milano took place from 21 to 26 April. Official closing figures recorded 316,342 visitors from 167 countries and regions, 4.5 per cent more than in 2025; 68 per cent of professional visitors came from outside Italy. More than 1,900 brands from 32 countries exhibited, while 8,057 Italian and 6,361 international students attended. SaloneSatellite gathered about 700 designers under 35. Scale and international reach remained Milan’s foundation, but the focus of discussion had clearly changed.

Design Analysis

The strongest signal was the return of technology and environmental thinking from separate showcases into products themselves. Furniture increasingly concealed lighting, sensing, acoustics, temperature control and connectivity within its structure, reducing the presence of screens and devices so that intelligence was felt through maintenance, efficiency and comfort. Material displays placed more emphasis on origin, disassembly and second use; stand designers explained transport, repeat assembly and end-of-show destinations. Sustainability now requires evidence across a process, not just a green label.

EuroCucina and the International Bathroom Exhibition demonstrated this convergence especially clearly. Kitchens and bathrooms became interfaces for energy, water, health and domestic collaboration. Brands had to address durable surfaces, modular repair, ergonomics and data services together. At the other end of the spectrum, young designers at SaloneSatellite retained low-tech approaches, craft and material experimentation, providing a test bed for alternatives to mass manufacture. The juxtaposition maintained a necessary tension between industrial efficiency and cultural exploration.

AURELIS Position

Salone remains a commercial event, but it increasingly resembles an annual stress test for the global design supply chain. Beauty still matters, yet buyers and the media ask deeper questions: how is a product made and transported, how long before replacement, and can it be repaired when its technology fails? For brands entering international markets, recognition alone is no longer enough. Design language must become a verifiable system of materials, service and lifecycle planning. Premium value is shifting from expensive surfaces to long-term trust.
